Disorders that involve the temporomandibular joint are termed TMJ or TMD. The temporomandibular joint consists of the hinge joints on both sides of the jaw. They attach the lower jaw to the temporal bone of the skull. When the bones, muscles, cartilage or tendons of the jaw joint are dysfunctional or under stress, it can cause the symptoms of TMD.
