Having a healthy mouth doesn’t just mean being cavity-free. Your gum tissue has a lot to do with the overall well-being of your oral health. Here are some tips from our New Braunfels dentist on how to get and keep healthy gums.
Brush your gums properly
A lot of people tend to focus on their teeth and ignore their gums when they brush. As a result, bleeding and tender gums occur. To avoid inflammation, make a conscious effort to brush your gums every time you brush your teeth. Do so gently, using a soft-bristled toothbrush at a 45-degree angle titled to where the gum tissue meets the tooth.
Floss your teeth
Flossing regularly is imperative to having healthy gums. If your gums bleed when you floss, then it’s probably because you’re not doing it often enough. Flossing at least once a daily is recommended.
Get regular dental checkups
Getting a dental checkup and a professional cleaning every six months will allow us to check on areas that you missed and inspect your oral health.
Stop smoking
Smoking and using other tobacco products weaken the immune system, which in turn makes people more susceptible to certain diseases, including gum disease.
Stop grinding
While grinding sounds like something that would only affect your teeth and jaw, sadly, it can do a number of your gums, causing the tissue to recede. Wearing a nightguard while you sleep can prevent you from grinding.
